Desalination
It is said that about 97% of all water on the earth is seawater
and about 3% is fresh water. Only 0.8% of all water is usable
from rivers or underground sources.
Converting sea water to potable water by desalination has been
attempted for a long time. The total capacity of world's desalination facilities available at present is in excess of
20 million m3/day.
WRPC has been engaged in the development and promotion of sea
water desalination technologies such as evaporation, reverse osmosis,
freezing, and thermopervaporation. The reverse osmosis process
in particular, consumes the least amount of energy and is easy
to operate and maintain. It is most suited to desalination of
salt water. |
